The Challenge
The library was running on paper and spreadsheets. Finding a title meant walking the shelves; tracking who had borrowed what, when it was due, and what was still in stock was manual, error-prone and slow. As the collection grew past a few thousand titles, the system simply could not keep up — and members had no way to browse or search from home.
They needed a custom library management web app: something that digitised the entire catalogue, tracked inventory in real time, handled book issues and returns with receipts, worked in more than one language for a diverse community, and — crucially — would keep performing as the collection scaled well beyond 5,000 books.
What We Built
We built a custom web application (not an off-the-shelf tool bent to fit) around how a real library actually operates:

- Digitised catalogue with instant search across titles, authors and ISBNs — members and staff find any book in seconds instead of walking the stacks.
- Inventory records that track every copy: available, issued, reserved or overdue, updated in real time as books move.
- Issue & return workflow with receipts — lending and returns are logged against members, with due dates and printable/emailable receipts, replacing the paper ledger entirely.
- Multilingual interface so the app serves the community in more than one language from the same codebase.
- Built to scale — the data model and search were engineered to stay fast well past 5,000+ books, so the library never outgrows the system.
The result runs live today as a public catalogue web app that members can browse and search directly.
The Results
The library moved from paper and spreadsheets to a single, searchable system:
- 5,000+ books digitised into one catalogue, with headroom to grow.
- Instant search replaced manual shelf-hunting for both staff and members.
- Issues, returns and inventory tracked automatically, with receipts — no more lost ledgers.
- Multilingual access for the whole community from one web app.
